Carlos Prates is done entertaining the noise. The Brazilian knockout artist, currently sitting near the top of the welterweight rankings, responded directly to callouts from Sean Brady, Uros Medic, and others with a clear message. Calm down. His next fight is for the belt. After that, he will deal with the rest of the division.

That statement lands at a critical moment. Islam Makhachev puts the welterweight title on the line against Ian Machado Garry on August 15 at UFC 330 in Philadelphia. Prates already has a loss to Garry on his record, a decision setback that remains the only blemish on his UFC run. He has since bounced back with strong finishes, including a stoppage of former champion Jack Della Maddalena earlier this year. That win pushed him firmly into title contention territory.

The outcome on August 15 will shape everything. If Garry pulls off the upset and becomes the new champion, Prates is in a strong position to demand an immediate rematch or a quick turnaround title fight. He has already shared the Octagon with Garry, he sits high in the rankings, and the narrative of a second chance against the new champ would write itself. In that scenario, we could be looking at a Prates title shot before the end of 2026 or very early in 2027.

If Islam successfully defends and remains champion, the path gets a little more complicated. Makhachev has already floated the idea of other contenders cleaning up the division, specifically mentioning Michael Morales as someone who needs to fight Prates or another top name. Morales remains undefeated and sits right behind the top two in most rankings. A win for Islam could open the door for a Morales-Prates eliminator or force Prates to wait longer while the champion decides his next move. In that case, a title opportunity for Prates might slide deeper into 2027.

The rest of the division is not sitting quietly. Sean Brady and Uros Medic have been among the more vocal names looking for a big fight with Prates. Gabriel Bonfim continues to climb. Jack Della Maddalena is still ranked and dangerous. And then there is Shavkat Rakhmonov, who is finally showing real progress in his recovery from knee surgeries and remains a massive wild card once he returns. The welterweight picture is stacked, and Prates knows it. That is exactly why he is planting his flag now.
