The cruiserweight division just got a major jolt of activity. Undefeated David Benavidez, the WBA and WBO champion, is closing in on a three-belt unification against WBC titleholder Noel Mikaelian. Promoter Sampson Lewkowicz confirmed a verbal agreement is in place, with the contracts expected to be finalized before the week is out and a November date on the calendar.

Benavidez sits at a perfect 32-0 with 26 knockouts after moving up and stopping Gilberto Ramirez earlier this year to claim those two belts. The Arizona powerhouse has already collected titles in three different weight classes, and this fight would put three of the four major cruiser straps around his waist. Mikaelian, the Armenian-born fighter also known as Norair, holds a 28-3 record and reclaimed the WBC title with a decision over Badou Jack last December. He has been ordered to face Benavidez and now appears ready to cash in on the mandatory.

A win for Benavidez would leave only the vacant IBF title standing between him and undisputed status. That belt is expected to be filled later when Viddal Riley meets the winner of an August eliminator. For Mikaelian this is the biggest payday and stage of his career against one of the most avoided and dangerous punchers in the sport. Styles make this one intriguing because Benavidez walks people down with volume and power while Mikaelian has shown durability and ring IQ in title fights.
Nothing is fully inked yet, but the pieces are lining up fast. November is the target window and both sides seem motivated to get it done. If the contracts land as expected, cruiserweight suddenly has one of the clearer paths to a true champion that the division has seen in years.
