Moses Itauma vs Filip Hrgovic Upgraded to Vacant IBF Heavyweight Title Fight

Moses Itauma’s next fight just became a world title shot. The 21-year-old British heavyweight will face Croatia’s Filip Hrgovic on August 29 at The O2 Arena in London, and the vacant IBF heavyweight belt is now on the line. Promoter Frank Warren confirmed the upgrade after Frank Sanchez agreed to step aside.

Itauma comes into this fight with a perfect 14-0 record and 12 knockouts. He stopped Jermaine Franklin in five rounds back in March and has looked like one of the most exciting young heavyweights in the sport. At just 21 years old he already carries serious power and speed, and this is the biggest test of his career so far. Hrgovic, 34, brings experience and size. The Olympic bronze medalist is 20-1 with 15 knockouts, and his only loss came against Daniel Dubois. He is coming off a stoppage win over Dave Allen and has long been viewed as a top contender.

The IBF title became available when Oleksandr Usyk vacated several of his belts. The sanctioning body had ordered Itauma and Sanchez into negotiations, but a step-aside deal was worked out so the already-scheduled Itauma-Hrgovic bout could carry the vacant title. Sanchez will get the winner as his next opponent with no interim fights in between. That sets up a clear path for whoever comes out on top at The O2.

This matchup has been billed as a litmus test for Itauma. Hrgovic is bigger, more experienced, and has been in the ring with elite competition. Itauma has the youth, the athleticism, and the knockout power that has people talking about him as a future face of the division. A win would make him one of the youngest heavyweight champions in modern history and put him in position for even bigger fights down the line, including potential unification bouts involving the WBO picture with Daniel Dubois and Fabio Wardley.
